Installing on Mac
Install Discovery Engine from the disk image, get past the first-launch macOS warning, and know where everything ends up.
#Before you start
- A Mac with Apple Silicon running macOS 14 or later.
- The installer: a disk image named like
Discovery Engine_0.1.0_aarch64.dmg(the version number may differ). - An internet connection for the first start, when the app downloads its reading models.
#Install
- Double-click the
.dmgfile. A window opens with the Discovery Engine app in it. - Drag Discovery Engine into your Applications folder.
- Eject the disk image (drag it to the Trash, or right-click it in Finder and choose Eject).
- Open Discovery Engine from Applications or Launchpad.
#"macOS cannot verify the app" (first launch only)
This version of the app is not yet signed with an Apple Developer ID, so the first time you open it, macOS stops it with a message that it cannot verify the developer. This is expected. To allow it, once:
- Click Done (or OK) on the warning.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down to the security section. You'll see a line saying Discovery Engine was blocked.
- Click Open Anyway, and confirm with your password or Touch ID if asked.
- Open the app again. From now on it opens normally.
#The first start
The app opens on a short setup: it checks disk encryption, downloads the reading models (about 1 GB, once), and helps you create your first case. See First launch and setup.
#Updating to a newer version
- Quit Discovery Engine.
- Open the new
.dmgand drag the app into Applications. Choose Replace when Finder asks. - Open the app. Your cases, models and settings are kept: they live in the app's data folder, not inside the app.
If you use the command-line tool with an AI agent, open the Start Up screen after updating. If it says the command-line tool needs updating, click Update command-line tool.

#Uninstalling
- Quit Discovery Engine.
- Drag Discovery Engine from Applications to the Trash.
- If you want everything gone, also delete:
- the data folder,
~/Library/Application Support/Discovery Engine(this deletes every case's database, highlights and agent log; your original files are elsewhere and are not touched); - the command-line tool,
~/.local/bin/discovery; - if you clicked Add to PATH, the line
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"the app added to~/.zprofile.
- the data folder,
Your original case files are never inside the app or its data folder, so uninstalling never removes them.
