All cases

See every case on this computer with its size, open or create cases, switch between them, and fix a case whose folder has moved.

#The Cases screen

Open All cases in the left column. The screen is titled Cases: A case is one folder of files. They stay where they are; the app only reads them.

Each case in the list shows:

  • its name and its folder;
  • Last opened, on the case you used most recently;
  • Folder not found, if its folder can't be reached right now;
  • the date it was created;
  • its size on this computer. Hover for the breakdown: Database 1.2 GB · attachments 210 MB. The database holds the text, the search index and everything else the app has worked out; attachments are files the app took out of ZIP archives and e-mails.

And two buttons: Export… (see Moving a case to another computer) and Open.

#Opening a case

Click Open. The app makes it the current case and takes you to its Progress screen. The current case is also the one your AI agent works on unless it names another case by ID.

You can also switch cases with the Case picker at the top of the left column. It keeps you on the same kind of screen: from one case's Search to the other case's Search.

#Creating a case

Under New case, type a Case name, choose the folder your attorney sent, and click Create case. Reading starts at once, and the new case takes over the settings of the case opened last. See Creating a case.

If the case was created but reading couldn't start, the screen says so and offers Open the case; from there, start reading on Progress.

#When a case's folder can't be found

If you open a case whose folder has been moved, renamed, or is on a drive that isn't connected, the app asks Find this case's folder:

  1. It shows where the case expected its files.
  2. Choose the folder's new location, then click Use this folder.
  3. The app checks the case's files against the new folder:
    • All 1,530 files were found in the new folder. The case reads from there now.
    • Or: 12 of 1,530 files are not in that folder. Their work is kept and they're marked missing. If that's the wrong folder, choose another from Settings.
  4. Click Continue.

If the drive simply isn't connected right now, choose Open without it. Everything already read stays searchable; new and changed files can't be read until the folder is back.

To point a case somewhere else on purpose, use Settings → This case → Case folder → Change folder…

#Importing a case

Import a case… at the top of the screen adds a case exported from another computer, without reading its documents again. See Moving a case to another computer.

#Deleting cases

There is no button to delete a single case in this version. Settings → Start over → Delete every case… deletes every case's database, highlights, agent log and cached pages from this computer (it asks you to type DELETE). Your case folders and their files are never touched, and can be read again as new cases.
