Graph

See the case's main people, organizations and accounts as a picture or a list, open each one's card, and jump to how two of them connect.

#What the Graph shows

The Graph screen draws the people, organizations and accounts that appear in the most documents, and the lines between them. It is built on your computer from the names the app found; nothing is sent anywhere.

It never shows everything at once. A graph with five thousand dots explains nothing, so it opens on the busiest names and lets you widen the view.

  • Dots are people, organizations, accounts and (if you choose) addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. They are grouped by the case's categories, or by kind until documents have categories.
  • Lines join two that are connected. What counts as connected is your choice (below).
  • When there are many connections, only the strongest are drawn, and a note says how many of how many are shown.

#The controls

ControlWhat it does
Find a name + FindJumps to a name among those shown. If it isn't shown, the note says so: show more to look further.
Kinds to showTick People, Organizations, Accounts, Addresses and the other kinds. The count beside each is how many the case has.
ShowHow many to draw: 20, 40 (the default), 80, 120 or 200.
Lines joinNamed together: named in the same passage, or writing to each other. Same documents: anywhere in the same document.

#The card

Hover over a dot for a quick summary: its kind, its name, how many documents it appears in, of what kinds, and when it was first mentioned. Click it to open its card:

SectionShows
Appears inHow many documents and passages.
Of whichThe kinds of those documents (e-mails, PDFs, recordings…).
WithHow many people appear in the same documents.
MentionedWhen it is mentioned, from first to last.
GroupThe group it is drawn in.
ConnectionsThe others it is joined to, each with what the line stands for (for example 3 passages · 2 e-mails · 12 documents). Click a name to open that card.
DocumentsThe documents that mention it most. Click an ID to open the document. Show all N lists more.

Next to each connection is How?. It opens the Connections screen with the two of them already picked, so you can see every passage where they meet. See Connections.

#The List view

List shows the same entities grouped the same way, as tables with each one's name, kind, counts, first mention and connections. It's easier to scan than the picture and works well with a keyboard or a screen reader.

#Making the graph more accurate

The graph is only as good as the names it is built from:

  • Merge spellings of the same person on the People screen. Otherwise one person can appear as three dots with their connections split between them. See People and merges.
  • Let reading finish. Names appear as files are read.
  • Check surprises in the documents. Names come from automatic detection. A word the detector took for a name, or a company it missed, is possible. Open the card's documents to check.
